Cornfield Ant
o£p³ »[£ýr… Yªƒ¨w¨»{£‰
The
life of ants has long been a source of interest to all and makes
them favourite objects for study.
The Cornfield Ant is the most common and abundant of all our
ants, and is found in fields and on lawns. The ant colony is
usually established by a queen, who sheds her wings.
She lays about 200 eggs which produce workers, soldiers, males,
and other queens. Once mated, the queen can produce eggs for the
rest of her life, which may be as long as 10 to 15 years.
Ants keep aphids (small plant lice) for the honeydew (sweet
sticky substance) they produce, much the same as we keep cattle.
Slave ants are also used to lessen the labour of ants. These
ants are seized while they are still larvae and brought home to
the nests, to become servants in the colonies of the raiders.
